The season

The first United Football League season, played after the XFL and USFL merged, ended with a familiar champion. Birmingham went 9–1 to win the USFL Conference, rallied from an 18–3 deficit to beat Michigan 31–18 in the conference final, then shut out San Antonio 25–0 in St. Louis for its third straight spring-football title. It was the only shutout of the UFL season. League MVP Adrian Martinez led the UFL with 528 rushing yards and scored all three Birmingham touchdowns in the title game. St. Louis receiver Hakeem Butler led the league with 652 receiving yards, Michigan’s Breeland Speaks led with 9.5 sacks, and Panthers coach Mike Nolan was Coach of the Year after a 7–3 season.
