The season

In its second season the USFL played in four hub cities — Birmingham, Memphis, Detroit and Canton — with the same eight teams and a 10-week regular season. Birmingham had the league’s best record at 8–2 and New Orleans (7–3) also qualified from the South. In the North, Pittsburgh, Michigan and Philadelphia all finished 4–6; Pittsburgh won the division and Michigan took the second playoff spot. New Orleans’ McLeod Bethel-Thompson led the league with 2,433 passing yards, teammate Wes Hills led in rushing (679 yards), Philadelphia’s Corey Coleman led in receiving (669 yards) and Michigan’s Breeland Speaks led with 9 sacks. MVP Alex McGough, who took over after starter J’Mar Smith was injured in Week 1, led the league with 20 touchdown passes, then threw four more in the championship as Birmingham beat Pittsburgh 28–12 for its second straight title.
